| Abstract | Most of automatic detection systems for oil spills are composed of four parts: a) the SAR image preprocessing; b) the dark spots detection; c) the feature extraction for each dark spot detected, and; d) the classification of each dark spot detected as an oil spill or a lookalike. At the end of the processing chain the system must be able to emit an alert signal estimating the probability of a dark spot to be an oil spill. The researches concluded by Bentz in 2006 found an automatic method to classify the different dark spots detected in the SAR images as oil spills or environmental occurrences. Although the classification process has been done automatically, the dark spot detection has been done with human intervention. In this context, the objective of this paper is to investigate the two first parts of the processing chain looking for an adequate preprocessing method and the image segmentation software. The future perspective is to develop a completely automatic system. | |||
